Thanks to everyone who provided some advice - we had a marvellous time and an amazing hiking experience along the Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork (took some days off at Volcano Huts in Thorsmork - a great place with great food) before continuing to SkГіgar. One last thing-does your Garmin have an Icelandic keyboard? I'm going back this summer, and all places I want to visit have their coordinates listed in my 'My Places' maps and will be transferred into my Garmiin. Given that most of the road signs and physical maps refer to roads and highways by their numbers, it can cause a problem-this is an endemic problem with Garmin, and not just restricted to Iceland.Дon't intend to scare you, but the more you have the coordinates of the places you want to go to before your trip, the easier your trip will be. The other annoying thing about Garmin, should you choose to go that route (no pun intended) is that the streets in the directions and on the Garmin map are referred to by their names, and not their numbers. Almost as though there were two databases at work. If you can get GPS coordinates of your destinations before you leave, and input those into your device, you're good to go, but searching for the places by name on Garmin is problematic not just because the names can be spelled in Icelandic or in English, but also because the database is great at telling you where you are once you get there, but not at finding your destination when you first input it. On a tangent, I don't want to cause a flaming war, but I had a lot of problems with the GPS search function using Garmin last year in Iceland (as did some others). Assuming you have a GPS in your tablet or your smartphone, you may be set.

If you are looking for routeable maps of Iceland, again, I don't know how good they are, but you can find them for free for both the iPad and Android tablets/phones at MapsWithMe and also (I believe) at Maps2Go. Are you looking for a routeable map of Iceland or a topographical map of the hike? If the latter, you can get a free one from -just search for Iceland.
